THE SQUID HOTEL

Unguja, Zanzibar

The Squid Hotel is located on the north-eastern coast of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago, in the Matemwe village.

The architecture follows the slope of the site, t herefore every single space created is oriented towards the sea. The project is segmented in 4 areas that are gradually closer to the sea and in a stronger bond to it.

The first area is the Accommodation Area, offering 248 rooms part of 1 and 2 story units organized in a cascade-like plan opening to the sea-view and a 3 story public area sheltering the main restaurant, bars, shops and the reception area. There are 4 types of rooms, each having a canvas covered terrace.

As we get closer to the sea the architecture loses materiality, so the Leisure Area is a filter between the Beach and the Accommodation Areas, having a 3 story infinity pool, a beach restaurant and a pool-bar. The metal structures and canvases create covered spaces fully opened to the site.

The forth area is the Jetty, a beautiful belvedere that can be reached after a 400 meters promenade in the sea.
